A scoping review about the effect of Spirulina maxima (Arthrospira maxima) supplementation on arterial hypertension. Objective: Evaluate the effect of Spirulina maxima as a supplement for the treatment of hypertension in humans. Eligibility criteria: Primary research articles, publish from 2000 onwards, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Data source: The search was performed using an electronic data base of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, and Open Grey. Bias risk assessment of studies: The CONSORT 2010 instrument and the Jadad Scale were used to assess the quality of the selected studies. Results: 4 articles were included for this review, where a significant decrease in blood pressure levels was found after supplementation with Spirulina maxima in patients with or without pharmacological treatment. Conclusion: Supplementation with Spirulina maxima reduced blood pressure levels, and only two studies reported mild adverse effects (upset stomach and headache) in the first weeks of intervention. Significant results were found at a dose of 2 g/day for 8 weeks, in the studies that continued taking the drugs along with Spirulina maxima supplementation. Studies that discontinued drug use generated significant results at a dose of 4.5 g/day for 6 weeks.
