Introduction: Aspiration of foreign body is a common urgency in pediatric patients. In our country we have tools as bronchoscope for the extraction of foreign bodies located in lower airways. There are studies that show a reverse association between time of illness and hospital stay after the extraction of foreign bodies. However, in Perú, we could not find studies about this topic. Objectives: Describe an asociation between time of illness prior to bronchoscopy and hospital stay. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Place: Pediatric Emergency Hospital of Lima – Peru. Materials: 324 medical records were reviewed. Of wich 270 had foreign body aspiration as a diagnosis. Those medical records where the location was different from the lower airway were filtered. 183 were suitable for the study. Results: There is an association between time of illness prior to bronchoscopy and the time of hospital stay after the extraction of foreing body (RR 2.07; IC 1.22 – 3.52) Conclusions: There is a statistically significant association between the time of illness prior to bronchoscopy and the time of hospital stay after the extraction of foreing body. This is very important, since it could be helpfull to promote an early managment and a timely diagnosis in the pediatric patient.
