In the present research, we delve into both the history and the musical analysis of different musical genres that determine the elements of interpretation used by bassist Salvador Cuevas in Fania All Stars' salsa. As for the historical framework, it is proposed to review the musical events that precede the construction of salsa, among which there are Afro-Cuban and Afro-American elements. For these reasons, it is necessary to cover, chronologically, events that took place both in Cuba and in the United States. On the one hand, the context in which some Afro-Cuban musical manifestations such as son, danzón, mambo, cha cha chá and descargas were developed is studied. On the other hand, the history of Afro-American genres such as blues, work songs, spirituals, R&B, gospel, and jazz is investigated. This is how we follow a timeline of the development of the music, starting with cubop. Then, we focus on the mambo and rock & roll boom. And then, using as a basis the studies of the musical phenomena mentioned above, we analyze the Fania All Stars salsa phenomenon. As for the musical analysis, transcriptions of representative themes for each genre are used, implementing a combination of the inductive and explanatory methods. The inductive method starts from the specific characteristics of a musical theme to achieve a broader understanding of the genre to which the theme belongs, while the explanatory method seeks to understand the reasons why a musical theme contains certain specific characteristics. It is thanks to the use of these two methods that the goal of understanding the interpretation of the electric bass in salsa can be achieved.
