The current investigation works the qualitative methodology, with an action research design that refers to the creation and application of a teaching proposal for the understanding of number and quantity in five-year-old children in a private school in Metropolitan Lima. This proposal is based on the construction, understanding and functionality of mathematical concepts from a learning project called Center of Interest, which was applied during the COVID 19 pandemic, in a group of preschool children. The theoretical framework of this research focuses on the characteristics of the center of interest as a proposal for learning and acquiring the concept of number quantity in early childhood education. Once the proposal was applied, adjustments were made, redesigning the learning activities, according to the design cycles of pedagogical proposals (Elliot, 2005) for action research. Through a checklist, observations were made in each application cycle. Finally, the results and reflections indicate that the teaching proposal based on a center of interest allows the design of significant activities that involve the understanding of mathematical notions and are functional for the mathematical performance of the students.
