Introduction: Anxiety and depression are mental disorders that can affect the University students. A factor related to these disorders is housing conditions as overcrowding, that it is a factor that influences mental health. Due to this, we will estimate the association between overcrowding and the presence of depression and/or anxiety symptoms during social isolation by COVID-19. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical study in Health Sciences students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Lima, Peru. We enrolled students between 18 and 28 years-old and excluded students with a previous diagnosis of anxiety, depression, hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism. We applied a virtual survey to evaluate the presence of depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), anxiety symptoms (DAG-7) and family functionality (Family Apgar). Results: We found a prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms of 85.85% and 81.03%, respectively. We did not find an association between overcrowding and the presence of depressive symptoms (PR 1.08 CI95% 0.98 - 1.19) nor the presence of anxiety symptoms (PR 1.07 CI95% 0.95 - 1.21). Additionally, we found that dysfunctional family had an association with the presence of both symptoms (depression and anxiety). Conclusions: In the present study, the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in the Health Sciences students was 85.85% and 81.03%, respectively. Additionally, no association was found between overcrowding and to presence symptoms of depression or anxiety. Likewise, it was found that the dysfunctional family is considered a stressor that can be related to the presence of anxiety and depression symptoms.
