A divorce doesn’t need to have a strong impact in a person’s life, but it’s definitely a change. The intensity of the pain that one experiences from a divorce can be so high it’s only overshadowed by the death of a loved one. This study focuses on describing the adaptive functions in divorced mothers. The method used is qualitative, with a phenomenological focus, which is objective, replicable and validates the experiences of the woman interviewed. Said interviewees were selected with a snowball chain sampling, then subjected to a semi structured interview, which gathered their experiences from before and after the separation., and a sociodemographic sheet, which picked up specific data. The participants were selected for being woman, having children, a middle sociodemographic class, being currently divorced and have at least a year since said separation. Regarding age, the range surged spontaneously (46 – 56 years old). The size of the sampling was determined by the use of saturation, toping at ten interviewees. The results indicated that the adaptive functions are capable of softening an emotional blow that generated crisis. This investigation focuses on the interviewee’s seven adaptive functions, which has served to see them specifically through the divorce, this seven being the most commonly used by them. This implies that these adaptive functions are strategies that allow the mothers to adapt, achieve emotional balance and a better quality of life.
