The main objective of the prisons in Peru is the reintegration and resocialization of the inmate in society so that crime levels can be reduced in the country. However, due to the increasing crime rates during the last years and the level of criminal recidivism observed, it is necessary to evaluate which factors could influence the likelihood of criminal recidivism in Peru using the economic theory of crime approach. The objective of this research work is to test the hypothesis about whether socioeconomic factors are the ones that stand out in determining the probability of reoccurring in criminal activities for which a Probit econometric model will be used and variables such as age, number of children, type of crime, etc., finding that socioeconomic factors and the environment to which criminals are or have been exposed have a great influence on the likelihood of criminal recidivism and that inmates who are being held for crimes against the patrimony has a greater probability of recidivism than the inmates who are being held for crimes associated with drugs and against the person.
