Traffic congestion is one of the problems that most affects the quality of life in the city of Lima, increasing travel times and generating economic losses, and polluting the planet; before it is important The variable speed system is a traffic management tool focused on decreasing the speed limits allowed in a road by analyzing the flow of vehicles that travel the road, mainly during peak hours, to ensure a continuous flow and avoid the formation of bottlenecks and queues along the road. The main objective of this thesis project is to evaluate the benefits obtained by applying the variable speed system in the expressway Javier Prado, between the Monitor Huáscar oval and Paseo de la República avenue in the city of Lima. To do this, a comparison of traffic behavior was made using the variable speed system and the traffic behavior under the current situation. Comparing the densities obtained during the gauging carried out and the simulation, a reduction in the considerable travel time was obtained, improving the behavior of the road in all its extension and homogenizing the vehicular flow. It was found that variable speed is a tool to be considered in free traffic routes that allows improving traffic behavior without altering the geometric design of it.
