This study bases on a qualitative research that aims to understand the process of coping with addiction in drug-dependent mothers who attend a therapeutic rehabilitation facility in the district of Lurín, Lima Metropolitana province. The choice of a qualitative approach allows understanding in greater depth the experience of the interviewees regarding specific aspects related to gender and motherhood that, according to the reviewed studies, intervene in addiction and should be considered in order to understand the particularities of this group profile, in this case, six drug-dependent mothers. Furthermore, through this approach, it has been possible to explore their coping strategies, which have cognitive, emotional and behavioral components, discovered in detail through a semi-structured in-depth interview, since through the free narration of the mothers' experience it is possible to carry out an interpretative analysis of the information to understand these components. For this purpose, the history of consumption was explored (way of starting on addiction and main motives), as well as the key moment that led them to react to their drug addiction problem (especially, critical situations such as affective and material losses, or conflictive situations, among others). The process in which different coping strategies express and the place of motherhood in this matter, was also explored. Results show that mothers face their problems, before and after going to rehabilitation, both in an adaptive and unhealthy way. Finally, it is noticed that motherhood is a relevant factor that influences their coping, both in their adherence to rehabilitation, bond with their children, maternal self-image, and the perception that the environment have of them.
