BJECTIVE: To determine whether exclusive breastfeeding is a protective factor for hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analytical, observational, retrospective study of cases and controls, with a sample consisting of 2 groups: 32 hospitalized and 64 non-hospitalized children, between 6 months and 5 years of age, diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and its possible association with exclusive breastfeeding (LME), the data were collected in a data collection form from the medical records of each child included in the study, and who have been treated at the Albrecht Hospital in Trujillo during the years 2016 -2019. For the analysis, the statistical package IBM SPSS STATISTICS 26 was used. RESULTS: The frequency of children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) who were hospitalized and who received exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in was 28.1% and of those who were not hospitalized was 73.4%, the association between exclusive breastfeeding and hospitalization with community-acquired pneumonia is statistically significant (p < 0.001; OR: 0.142, 95% CI: 0.055-0.366), so that children who are fed with SCI have 85.8% less chance of being hospitalized for CAP, with exclusive breastfeeding being a protective factor. In the multivariate analysis, it was found that no variable was statistically significant in predicting hospitalization for CAP.
