OBJECTIVE: To establish whether child abuse is associated with the development of suicidal behaviors in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional, prospective correlational study was carried out, which evaluated 39 patients of the psychiatric service of the Mental Health Center “El Porvenir“ with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. The EPCA (Scale of thoughts and self-injurious behaviors) modified for suicidal behaviors and the “Child Trauma Questionnaire“ (CTQ-SF) short version and in Spanish were used. RESULTS: The frequency of suicidal behaviors was 67% of the total of patients with BPD; the bivariate analysis for the association of both study variables showed that the variables with the most significance (p <0.05) were the history of childhood sexual abuse OR: 10.29 95% CI [1.69-62.74] (X2= 7.863, p= 0.005) and emotional negligence OR: 15.63 IC 95% [1.58-154.28] (X2= 7.977, p= 0.005). The history of physical abuse during childhood OR: 7.5 IC 95% [0.69-80.96] (χ2:3.482; p= 0.062), emotional abuse (χ2: 4.216; p = 0.105) and physical neglect (χ2: 4.216; p= 0.105) showed no association with the development of suicidal behaviors in patients with BPD. CONCLUSIONS: Child sexual abuse and emotional neglect are associated with the development of suicidal behaviors in patients with borderline personality disorder. The history of physical abuse, emotional abuse and physical neglect are not associated with the development of suicidal behaviors in patients with borderline personality disorder.
