Objective: To identify if neuroticism is a factor associated with Internet addiction in adolescents from public schools. Material and Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with a sample of 280 adolescents of the fifth grade of secondary school from 6 educational institutions of the province of Trujillo who met the selection criteria during the period March - April 2018. To evaluate the addiction to the internet, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and to evaluate neuroticism we used the revised NEO Personality Inventory, reduced version (NEO FFI). Results: The prevalence of Internet Addiction in adolescents of the fifth grade of secondary school was 35% and the prevalence of neuroticism was 70.3%. An association was found between neuroticism and Internet addiction (82.7% vs63.7%) (p = 0.001, OR = 2.71, 95% CI = 1.48-4.96). In the bivariate analysis it was found that adolescents addicted to the internet had an average age of 16.20± 0.47, the time of use of internet > 10h / week was 40.8% (p = 0.001, OR = 2.37, 95% CI = 1.39- 4.04) and network play was 43.9% (p = 0.017, OR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.11-3.09). In the multivariate analysis, it was found that Internet addiction was independently associated with neuroticism, time of internet use and network play. Conclusions: Neuroticism is higher in adolescents with Internet addiction than in those without such behavioral addiction.
