Objective: To determine if obesity constitutes a risk factor for the development of breast cancer in patients of the hospital III-1 ESSALUD José Cayetano Heredia Piura 2012-2013. Methodology: Observational, retrospective cross-sectional study of cases and controls matched by age of a relationship of 1: 1. The sample consisted of 78 women with breast cancer and anocher 78 with different diagnoses treated in Hospitalization of the Oncology Medicine Unit of Hospital III-1 EsSalud José Cayetano Heredia de Piura, from a population of 321. Results: 73.08% had stage IIA diseas. More than half, 58,97%, once had a complete mastectomy. There was recurrence in 35,89% of cases, and 28.71% died. The bivariate analysis found that obesity, having a history of breast cancer, and comorbidities are associated with breast cancer. In the analytical statistics it was found that breast cancer is 2.39 times more frequent in patients with a family history ( OR: 2.39 CI = 1-5.93), 2.45 times more frequent in patients with obesity (OR: 2.45 IC = 1.22-4.95), 2,72 times more frequent in patients with HT (OR:2,27 IC=0,73-12,3), 0,5 times more in patients with DM (OR:0,5 I=0,18-1,32), and 0,99 times more frequent in patients with dyslipidemias (OR:0,99 IC=0,95-0,99). Conclusion: Obesity constitutes a risk factor for breast cancer, like the family history of it. Likewise, patients with obesity identified a greater recurrence.
