In this research, the relationship between trade openness and poverty in Latin American countries is studied. For the study, a sample of 5 countries has been considered: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The trade openness indicator is the ratio of exports and imports to the national GDP, and the poverty indicator refers to the group of people whose income is below the poverty line. To measure the relationship, a 2-stage least squares regression is used, with variable effects, taking annual panel data for the period 2005-2021. The results indicate that there is an indirect relationship between both variables, this means that an increase in the trade openness index of each country reduces the level of poverty in the most representative countries of Latin America in the period studied.
