To determine whether constipation is a factor associated with prolonged hospital stay in the Intensive Care Unit in critically ill patients at the Víctor Lazarte Hospital. Material and methods: An analytical, observational cohort study was carried out in which 124 critically ill patients were included, according to selection criteria, which were divided according to the presence or absence of constipation. The demographic and clinical characteristics of the participants, as well as the hospital stay, were collected. The relationship between the variables according to the hospital stay was calculated with the chi-square test and the relative risk statistic, considering p < 0.05 significant. Results: The average number of days of use of mechanical ventilation and the frequency of use of sedatives were significantly higher in the group of patients with prolonged hospital stay (p<0.05), constipation is a factor associated with prolonged hospital stay in critically ill patients with a relative risk of 2.36, which was significant (p<0.05), in the multivariate analysis through logistic regression the significance of the risk for the variables was corroborated: constipation, prolonged mechanical ventilation time and use of sedatives as factors associated with stay prolonged hospital stay. Conclusion: constipation is a factor associated with prolonged hospital stay in the Intensive Care Unit in critically ill patients at the Víctor Lazarte Hospita
