Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a psychiatric disease that affects behavioral and cognitive development. It constitutes the most frequent chronic disease of the school period that traditionally begins in childhood and can persist until adulthood, resulting underachievement school, at the work, social, and family performance, violence, drugs, alcoholism, etc. This generates a negative impact in the quality of life to the person who suffers from it. Objective: To determine the association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and children who repeat the year of two educational institutions in the city of Sullana – Piura. Material and methods: The study design is observational, analytical of cases and controls. The population was made up of children from the third grade of primary school to the fifth grade of secondary school from two educational institutions. Two test were applied; the Zung and Rosenberg test, to measure anxiety and self-esteem respectively. In addition, the abbreviated Conners test to parents and teachers for the evaluation and the diagnosis of ADHD. The calculated sample was 41 cases and 82 controls. Results: It was found that 56.1% of the students who had repeated a semester also had ADHD, while 43.9% of the students who had not repeated did have ADHD, OR 5.707 95% CI (2,481 - 13,128) (p<0.05). In addition, it was found that students with ADHD are more susceptible to physical abuse, to be victims of bullying, to have low self-esteem and to participate in fights. Conclusions: It was found that there is an association between attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity with students who have repeated a year in educational institutions in the city of Sullana - Piura.
