The viral infection caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome type 2 coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has been called coronavirus disease 2019, COVID19), which is currently a viral, virulent and contagious pandemic that has spread widely throughout the world. As with any airborne respiratory viral infection, surgical and non-surgical patients can be affected. In this review, we seek to present the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the way abdominal surgery is performed, in order to provide information to help general surgeons in areas affected by the pandemic evaluate the safety of surgery and implement some hospital work strategies.
