Determine the prevalence of dental caries using the caries detection and evaluation system in schoolchildren from a school in Huanchaco-Trujillo. Methodology: The study was observational and cross-sectional; 220 I.E. schoolchildren were evaluated. 80033-Huanchaco, the sampling technique was simple random probabilistic. The instrument used was the ICDAS II index and the age, sex and grade of the students were also evaluated. The Chi square test was applied to relate the variables. Results: A 91.82% prevalence of dental caries was found in schoolchildren from 6 years to 12 years, with code 2 prevailing in the mesial. According to age, the prevalence was highest at 11 years of age, followed by 7 years of age; there being a significant difference (p <0.05). According to sex, the prevalence of dental caries was higher in men than in women (p>0.05). It was also higher in the 3rd grade of primary school; There is a significant difference with the other grades (p<0.05). Conclusions: Schoolchildren presented a high prevalence of dental caries according to the ICDAS II index, with a significant difference in age and school grade
