Objective: To determine if the chronic use of omeprazole (more than one year and continued use) is associated with osteoporosis in patients of the rheumatology department of Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, case-control study was conducted. The study population consisted of 99 adult patients; Which were divided into 2 groups: with osteoporosis or without osteoporosis; The odds ratio and chi-square test were calculated. Results: There were no significant differences between the study groups for the variables age, gender, origin, educational level or marital status. The frequency of chronic use of omeprazole in patients with osteoporosis was 17%. The frequency of chronic use of omeprazole in patients without osteoporosis was 7%. Chronic use of omeprazole is a risk factor for osteoporosis with an odds ratio of 2.72 which was significant (p <0.05). Conclusions: Chronic use of omeprazole is associated with osteoporosis in patients of the rheumatology department of Hospital Víctor Lazarte Echegaray.
