To determine whether rheumatoid arthritis is a risk factor for hypothyroidism in adults attended at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo in the period 2017-2018. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, analytical, case-control study was conducted, evaluating 258 adult patients with clinical history in the medicine service at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo, of which 86 patients correspond to the case group, while the remaining 172 correspond to the control group. Data were taken from the clinical histories of the patients. For the analysis of the results, the Pearson Chi-square test and the t-Student test were used, as well as the Odds ratio. RESULTS: In the group with hypothyroidism 91.9% were female (p<0.05), 4.7% of the patients were obese (p<0.05) and 1.2% presented diabetes (p<0.05). It was found that 4.7% of patients with hypothyroidism presented rheumatoid arthritis, while 0.6% of patients without hypothyroidism presented rheumatoid arthritis. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have 8.34 times higher risk of presenting hypothyroidism compared to patients who did not present rheumatoid arthritis (ORc 8.34; 95% CI: 0.918 - 75.816; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Rheumatoid arthritis is not a risk factor for hypothyroidism.
