The present research aimed to determine the association of emotional intelligence and work stress in nurses from critical COVID units of the Virgen de la Puerta High Complexity Hospital - EsSalud, 2021. The research was of a correlational applied type. The sample consisted of 62 nurses, to whom two instruments were applied, the first to measure the level of emotional intelligence and the second to measure the level of work stress, both instruments with α-Cronbach of 0.862 and 0.744 respectively. The results obtained showed that 83.9% of nurses were young adults and 16.1% were middle-aged adults; likewise, 100% of nurses were female; Regarding the time of service, 77.4% of nurses had a service time of less than 5 years. Regarding the level of emotional intelligence, 67.7% of nurses showed a medium level and 32.3% a high level; Likewise, in relation to the level of work stress, 54.8% of nurses had a medium level and 45.2% a low level. In conclusion, it was determined that the Chi Square statistical test obtained a value of 0.579 with a p = 0.045 (<0.05); Therefore, there is a significant association between emotional intelligence and work stress in nurses in critical COVID units of the Virgen de la Puerta High Complexity Hospital
