Objective: To determine if there is a relationship between the oral hygiene index and academic performance in the students of the Nuevo Perú Educational Institution. Material and Methods: The research was cross-sectional and observational. It was applied to students of the Nuevo Perú Educational Institution, the sample consisted of 180 students, who were in the fifth and sixth grade of primary school in the year 2023, using the probabilistic method. The O'Leary index and the collection of notes, given by their teachers, were used to determine the Academic Performance, classifying these according to the Qualification Scale in the Learning Assessment approved by Minedu. For the reliability of the O'Leary Index, a calibration was made with an expert. Results: It was found that there is no relationship between the Oral Hygiene Index and Academic Performance (p=0.801). Younger students present a lower Oral Hygiene Index (23.91%) compared to older students (28.38%), with a significant difference (p=0.05). The male sex presents a higher average percentage in the oral hygiene index (26.41%) compared to the female sex (25.83%) but without any significant difference (p=0.985). It was obtained that the best academic performance (Expected achievement) is presented by sixth grade students, fifth grade students presented from regular to low (Outstanding achievement and in process) with a relationship (0.05). Finally, the female sex presented better academic performance (Outstanding Achievement), compared to the male sex (Expected Achievement), having a relationship (p=0.03). Conclusions: There is no relationship between the Oral Hygiene Index and Academic Performance in schoolchildren of the Nuevo Perú Educational Institution. Younger students have a higher percentage of Oral Hygiene Index, compared to older ones, female students have a lower percentage of oral hygiene index compared to males. There is a relationship between academic performance with the degree of studies and with sex
