Objective: To determine if atrial fibrillation is a predictive factor for mortality in patients with decompensated heart failure Material and methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in which 245 patients with decompensated heart failure treated at the Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital in the period 2017 – 2018 were included, according to the selection criteria they were divided into 2 groups: 100 patients with atrial fibrillation and 145 without atrial fibrillation. A 30 day follow up was earried out in both groups and the relative risk and the chi-square statistical test were applied in the statistical analysis. Results: The mortality rate in patients with decompensated heart failure in general was 4%, on the other hand, the mortality rate in patients with atrial fibrillation and decompensated heart failure was 2% and the patients who did not present atrial fibrillation were 5%. In relation to the predictors, atrial fibrillation is not a predictor for mortality in patients with decompensated heart failure (RR=0.41 IC95% 0.09-195 p=0.248), however hyperlactatemia (RR=104.3 IC95% 8.4 – 1286.7 p=0.000) and blood pressure <100 mmhg (RR= 27.860 IC95% 2.6-288.7 p=0.005) if they are considered predictive factors for mortality in patients with decompensated heart failure. Conclusion: Atrial fibrillation is not a predictor, however hyperlactatemia and systolic blood pressure <100 mmhg are predictors of mortality in patients with decompensated heart failure.
