Objective: To determine the association between social anxiety and cyber dependence in university students in Piura during the year 2022. Material and methods: An observational, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted in university students of Piura during the year 2022, to evaluate the age, sex, year of studies, as well as the presence of anxiety associated with cyber dependence, making use of the social anxiety scale before social interaction and the Internet addiction test. respectively. Results: 397 participants met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the prevalence of total cyber dependence was 15.1% (13.0% for females and 18.5% for males). The prevalence of total social anxiety was 29.2% (33.7% for females and 21.8% for males). Participants aged 25 years or older and in the fifth to sixth year of studies had a higher frequency of cyber dependence. The prevalence of cybernetic dependence increased about fivefold in participants with social anxiety (aPR: 4.79, 9% CI 2.95 to 7.79, p < 0.001), with a threefold increase for females (aPR: 3.34, 95% CI 1.74 to 6.40, p < 0.001) and for males up to seven times more (aPR: 6.57, 95% CI: 3.39 to 12.73, p < 0.001), after adjusting for age and years of university studies. Conclusions: Social anxiety is significantly associated with the presence of cybernetic dependence in university students, and this relationship is maintained after stratifying by sex.
