To determine if exclusive breastfeeding is a protective factor for psychomotor retardation in children from 2 to 5 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, analytical, retrospective study of cases and controls, with a sample of 116 children (58 cases and 58 controls) and its possible association with exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), the data was collected in a collection form. of data from the medical records of each child included in the study and who have been treated at the Albrecht Hospital in Trujillo in 2019. RESULTS: The frequency of children with psychomotor retardation 29.3% received exclusive breastfeeding (LME) and of children without psychomotor retardation 84.5% received exclusive breastfeeding (LME), the association between exclusive breastfeeding and psychomotor retardation is statistically significant (p<0.001; OR: 0.08, 95% CI: 0.03-0.19) with exclusive breastfeeding being a protective factor. In the multivariate analysis, it was found that prematurity is statistically significant (OR; 9.12; 95% CI: 1.10 - 75.47 p<0.015), while no statistically significant association was found with the variables: sex, low birth weight, obesity, origin and orphan child (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Exclusive breastfeeding is a protective factor for psychomotor retardation in children from 2 to 5 years of age at Albrecht Hospital.
