Objective: To demonstrate whether intraoperative bleeding (greater than and equal to 500 ml) is a prognostic factor for postoperative morbidity (operative site infection, anastomotic dehiscence, fistula, intra-abdominal abscess, sepsis, pneumonia, urinary infection, atelectasis) in advanced gastric cancer in the Regional Institute of Neoplastic Diseases - Trujillo. Material and methods: A quantitative, observational, retrospective and analytical case-control study was carried out, in which 132 patients who were gastrectomized for advanced gastric cancer were included, which were divided according to the presence or absence of postoperative morbidity. Results: The percentage of patients with intraoperative bleeding greater than and equal to 500 ml in patients with advanced gastric cancer without postoperative morbidity was 48.5% and 51.5% in patients with postoperative morbidity. Intraoperative bleeding greater than and equal to 500 ml was not significantly associated with postoperative morbidity (OR= 1.13; p=0.728; 95% CI: 0.57 – 2.23). In the bivariate analysis, the type of gastrectomy was a prognostic factor for postoperative morbidity (p=0.029; OR 95% CI: 2.72 1.09 – 6.80). Conclusion: Intraoperative bleeding is not a prognostic factor for postoperative morbidity in patients with advanced gastric cancer treated at the Regional Institute of Neoplastic Diseases of Trujillo
