Objective: To demonstrate that the reduction of sleep hours is a risk factor for overweight / obesity in medical students. Material and Methods: Analytical, cross-sectional study, with a sample size of 285 5th and 6th year medical students from the Antenor Orrego Private University, the National University of Trujillo and the Cesar Vallejo University. The information was obtained through virtual and written surveys. Results: We found that the population of 126 overweight students, 56.3% said they had a decrease in sleep hours, while 43.7% said otherwise. Of the overweight / obese population of 159 students, 54.1% said they had decreased sleep hours, compared to 45.9% who stated otherwise. (p: 0.703; OR: 1.10, 95% CI 0.078-1.75) About the multivariate analysis of the factors associated with overweight / obesity in medical students, it was found that the female sex is a protective factor for the development of overweight / obesity , with statistical significance (p <0.05) Conclusion: -The decrease in sleep hours is not a risk factor for the development of overweight / obesity
