Determine if the presence of anemia and hypoalbuminemia is related to a higher risk of postoperative complications requiring intensive care in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Materials and methods: An observational, analytical, case-control study was carried out. The study population was made up of 99 patients requiring intensive care in patients undergoing abdominal surgery at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital in Trujillo. Materials and methods: An observational, analytical, case-control study was carried out. The study population was made up of 99 patients requiring intensive care in patients undergoing abdominal surgery at the Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital in Trujillo. Results: It was evident that anemia, duration of surgery and hospitalization time were identified as significant factors in postoperative complications in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, while other clinical and surgical variables did not show significant associations. Conclusions: In our study we were able to conclude that anemia was identified as an important risk factor for postoperative complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery, while hypoalbuminemia did not show a statistically significant association with these complications. These results highlight the importance of detection and management of anemia in surgical patients to reduce the risk of complications.
