Objective: The present research aimed to compare the in vitro bacterial adherence in teeth subjected to whitening with 50% ethanol extract of Musa paradisiaca and 35% hydrogen peroxide. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional, experimental and comparative study was carried out in the Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory of the Antenor Orrego Private University. The sample consisted of 18 premolars, which were divided into three groups: G1 (Control), G2 (50% ethanol extract of Musa paradisiaca) and G3 (35% hydrogen peroxide). Then, they were sterilized in an autoclave to be later exposed to the Streptococcus Mutans ATCC 25175 strain and incubated for 24 hours. After this period of time, they were placed in sterile test tubes with a clean culture medium to be centrifuged for 10 minutes in order to free the bacteria attached to the dental surfaces. 0.1 of the liquid was taken for the preparation of the 1/100 dilution and the culture on Petri dishes with Trypticase Soy Blood Agar, which were incubated for 48 hours. Bacterial adherence was measured by counting Colony Forming Units (CFU). The data was stored in Excel and processed using the statistical program SPSS version 23. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA Test, which was complemented by Post-Hoc Tests: Duncan’s test for multiple comparison of groups, and by Bonferroni’s test for comparison of means of two groups, considering a significance level of 5%. Results: A greater bacterial adherence was observed in Group III (35% hydrogen peroxide) with 77x105 CFU/ml; then followed by Group II (50% ethanol extract of Musa paradisiaca) with 40x105 CFU/ml; and finally by Group I (Control) with 89x104 CFU/ml, obtaining a significant difference between the three groups (p = 0.000), and a statistically significant difference between each experimental group and the control group and between experimental groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: It appears that both tooth whitening methods cause bacterial adherence on the dental surface, being bigger when using 35% hydrogen peroxide.
