In the present study, with the objective of determining the prevalence of canine obesity and identifying its associated factors in canines from Trujillo, 78 dogs were taken as a sample that were within the following inclusion criteria: from 1 year of age to more, of any race, sex and reproductive status. These were examined and classified by measuring their body condition (CC), through the 9-point scale of Laflamme (1997), considering dogs with a score of 8 and 9 as obese; obese dog owners were surveyed to determine if associated factors such as eating habits and physical activity influenced their presentation. In the results, a prevalence of 25.6% of canine obesity (20/78) was found and, regarding the associated factors, the reproductive status, type of feeding, feeding with leftover food, the administration of prizes or snacks and the frequency of activity had statistical significance (p≤0.05), being the whole dogs (90%) with mixed feeding (60%), which did receive remains of homemade food (85%), prizes or snacks (90%) and which performed physical activity sporadically (30%), the most prevalent; while sex, age and race did not have statistical significance (p≥0.05). It is concluded that canine obesity is prevalent in the city of Trujillo and is influenced by associated factors such as reproductive status, eating habits and physical activity.
