Objective: To determine that asthma is a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis in patients treated at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo during the years 2015–2020. Material and method: The design of this study is observational and case-control; the medical records of a total of 320 patientes treated in the Medicine Service of the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo were evaluated in the period from January 2015 to March 2020; from all of them, 160 had a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and the other 160 did not. The Odds Ratio and chi-square test were calculated to determine if there is an association with asthma. Results: From the 160 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 20 of them had a diagnosis of asthma (2.5%), while from the 160 patients without rheumatoid arthritis only 9 presented asthma (5.6%). An Odds Ratio of 2.4 (IC 95% 1.1 – 5.4) was calculated with a p value < 0.05, thus determining that asthma is a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis and that the association is statistically significant. In the analysis of the covariates, it is observed that only arterial hypertension can be considered as a risk factor in view of its significance (OR: 1.62, IC 95% 1.01 – 2.26, p < 0.05), while the variables age, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and COPD proved to be insignificant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Asthma is a risk factor for rheumatoid arthritis in patients treated at the Hospital Regional Docente de Trujillo.
