To demonstrate whether prematurity is a factor associated with amblyopia in children treated at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo. Material and Methods: Analytical, observational, case-control, retrospective study. The review of the pathophysiology of amblyopia and its association with prematurity was carried out. The research was carried out based on information recorded in the medical records of children diagnosed with amblyopia treated in the ophthalmology service, during the period 2018 - 2021. A data collection sheet validated by 02 experts was used. 88 children were registered. The sample obtained was from 44 children aged 4 to 11 years, divided into two groups: children with amblyopia (cases) and children without amblyopia (controls). Once the data was collected, the variables were analyzed by drawing up summary tables. The Odds Ratio (OR) was calculated for the association analysis with a 95% CI, taking into account statistical significance p<0.05. Results: The frequency of prematurity in children with amblyopia was 64%. The frequency of prematurity in children without amblyopia was 34%. An association was demonstrated between the variable prematurity con OR: 3.38, 95% CI (1.41-8.12), p-value: 0.006; which was significant (p<0.05); it is also observed that children aged 4 to 6 years (92%) and children aged 7 to 8 (73%) are less likely to have amblyopia compared to those aged 9 to 11 years, reason sufficient at the level of 5% (p<0.05) to affirm that age is a factor that is associated with amblyopia, p-value: 0.001. In addition, no association was found between gender, birth weight, Apgar score and birth route with amblyopia. Conclusions: Prematurity represents a risk factor associated with amblyopia in children treated at the Regional Teaching Hospital of Trujillo.
