Objective: Determine the association between problematic internet use (PIU) and insomnia in adolescents from an educational institution in Paiján, 2023. Material and methods: An observational, cross-sectional, correlational study was carried out whose participants were 113 adolescents from the 4th and 5th year of high school selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. To collect the data, the problematic Internet use scale in adolescents (EUPI-a) and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) were used. Results: The median age was 16 years. The frequency by sex was similar in both men and women with 49.6% and 50.4% respectively. Regarding insomnia, it was found that the most frequent category was insomnia below the threshold at 52.2% and clinical insomnia (moderate-severe) represented 15.1%. Furthermore, it was found that 72.6% of the adolescents had PIU. Evaluation of the association between PIU and insomnia showed that students with PIU have on average 2.23 points higher (from 1.43 to 5.27) of ISI compared to those without PIU. This result was statistically significant (p=0.001). Conclusion: Problematic Internet use is associated with higher insomnia scores in adolescents from an educational institution in Paiján, 2023
