Objective: Determine whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a factor associated with depression in children and adolescents of three schools of Trujillo. Material and methods: An analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample consisted of 454 children and adolescents from three Educational Centers of Trujillo, who met the selection criteria, during the period march - may 2018. The CES-D Scale was applied to children and adolescents to diagnose depression and the Conner’s Questionnaires for parents and teachers in its abbreviated form to diagnose ADHD to children and adolescents Results: The prevalence of depression was 15.4% and ADHD 13.2%. An association was found between ADHD and depression (p=0.001; OR=50.65; 95% CI [24.49–104.78]). The proportion of ADHD in the group with depression was 10.1% while in the group without depression it was 3.1%. The average age of students with depression was 11.93 ± 2.93 years. The bivariate analysis identified that age (p = 0.001), and the having separated / divorced parents (p = 0.019; OR = 1.88; 95% CI [1.11 – 3.21]) are significantly associated with depression. The multivariate analysis identified ADHD and age as factors associated with depression. Conclusions: ADHD is a factor associated with depression in children and adolescents of three educational centers of Trujillo, this will allow an early diagnosis to prevent complications in daily life and adequate treatment.
