Objective: To identify if there is a relationship between levels of depression and the time of illness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated at the Belén de Trujillo Hospital. Material and Methods: An analytical, correlational, observational, sectional study was carried out. The study population consisted of 123 patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus: which were divided according to the depression level and disease time categories of the chi square test and the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: No significant differences were observed regarding age, gender or origin among patients with or without depression. The distribution of patients according to time of illness was: 0 to 5 years (19%); 6 to 10 years (37%) and greater than 10 years (44%). The distribution of patients according to level of depression was: no depression (59%); mild depression (22%); moderate depression (15%); severe depression (4%). There is a correlation between the time of illness and depression levels with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.78. Conclusions: There is a relationship between levels of depression and the time of illness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus treated at the Belén de Trujillo Hospital.
