Objective: The objective of this study was to determine if thrombocytosis is a predictor of metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study was carried out. The study population consisted of 181 patients with colorectal cancer according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria divided into two groups: with or without metastasis, the odds ratio (OR) and chi square test were calculated. Results: The proportion of thrombocytosis in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer was 31%. The proportion of thrombocytosis in patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer was 12%. Thrombocytosis is a predictor of metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer [OR 3.32 IC 95% (1.66 – 6.64) p < 0.05]. In the multivariate analysis, the significance of the risk variables for thrombocytosis [OR 2.8 (1.7 – 4.3) IC 95% p=0.036], poor degree of histological differentiation [OR 2.6 (1.3 – 3.5) IC 95% p=0.039] and disease time greater than 2 years [OR 2.4 (1.2 – 4.1) IC 95% p=0.041], as predictors of colorectal cancer metastasis are verified. Conclusions: Thrombocytosis is a predictor of metastasis in patients with colorectal cancer.
