Determine the prepregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain in relation to birth weight in 2014 Chulucanas Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study was designed. 168 pregnant were selected whose births were attended in Chulucanas Hospital in 2014 according to the criteria of inclusion and exclusion. The population was stratified into four categories according to prepregnancy BMI (thinned: <19.8, Ideal: 19.8-26, Overweight: 26.1-29, Obese: > 29). Multiple regression analysis that included, maternal weight gain and usual weight of the mother as independent variables and dependent birth weight was performed. RESULTS: We found that pre-pregnancy BMI and weight gain during pregnancy significantly affect the birth weight with an average weight gain of 10,7Kg at the end of pregnancy and 92.9% of newborns appropriate for gestational age. CONCLUSIONS: There is a direct linear relationship between variables prepregnancy BMI and maternal weight gain during pregnancy with the weight of the newborn.
