Objective: To evaluate if the alteration of the perception and the low level of knowledge about the nutritional status of the mothers is associated with overnutrition in children from 3 to 5 of IEI of the district of Simbal. Material and methods: An analytical, cross-sectional, correlational study was carried out, having access to children and mothers of the IEIs of the Simbal district, maternal perception was evaluated through a pictogram, the level of knowledge through a test and the nutritional status, by means of measures Anthropometric. Results: 212 pairs were evaluated, mother-child, after crossing variables, it was found that 68% of children with overnutrition; the majority (66%) were classified by their mothers as normal, noticing a marked alteration in perception in this group, after applying the statistical test, a p-value of 0.007 and a Gamma coefficient of 0.605 were obtained. On the other hand, in terms of food knowledge, it was observed that of the 68.9% of children who classified as overnourished, 49.5% of their mothers obtained a low level of food knowledge, and a p-value of 0.000 was found. and a gamma coefficient of -0.440. Conclusion: The altered perception and the low level of knowledge of mothers about the nutritional status of their children is associated with overnutrition in these.
