or purpose: compare the presence of hypoglycemia among macrosomic newborns compared with normal-weight newborns attended at the Hospital Militar Central during the period of January to December 2013. Methods: Comparative analytic cross-sectional and retrospective study conducted in neonates attended at the Hospital Militar Central during the period of January to December 2013. The data was collected using a data collection sheet. The collection contained anthropometric characteristics and diagnostic newborn, besides potential perinatal complications. Results: The population was comprised of 265 births attended in this period, which 9.8% had a weight greater than 4000 grams; gender distribution was a male predominance; and an average weight of 4272 ± 241.3 grams, length of 52.0 ± 1.8 cm, and head circumference of 35.0 ± 1.3 cm was presented. Also, this population had a dystocic delivery of 76.9%. Hypoglycemia cases occurred in half of the population of macrosomic newborns (50%), having a higher frequency compared to normal-weight newborns(11.5%). In addition, there is a trend of increased cases by increasing birth weight. Finally, other complications recorded in this population were jaundice, potential infections, neonatal sepsis and cephalohematoma. Conclusions: The comparison of the characteristics of macrosomic newborns compared to normal-weight newborns in the Hospital Militar Central, in addition to the frequency of hypoglycemia, and other complications were determined. The data should be used for better guidance on cases of hypoglycemia in this specific population, allowing an early and efficient management to provide a better quality of life.
