To describe the clinical characteristics - epidemiology of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients treated at the hospital II-2 Sullana, during the period 2012- 2014. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional, observational research which studied 162 patients with the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, treated at the hospital II-2 Sullana during the period 2012- 2014 was conducted, who met the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of research. Data were coded and tabulated through a database in Microsoft Excel and the statistical program SPSS V.20. RESULTS: In the period 2012- 2014 the incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding was 6.59% of all patients hospitalized in the specialty hospital medicine II-2 Sullana. The age range showed higher tendency to develop gastrointestinal bleeding is between 60-79 years of age (43.2%), showing a predominance in males (61.7%). Most patients came from urban areas (61.7%), with secondary education (43.2%). The occupation rate is independent higher frequency (59.3%). In relation to the condition of insured patients mostly belong SIS insurance (84.6%). The time of most frequent disease was 4-7 days (59.9%). When diagnosing the causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding was found that peptic ulcer which had higher percentage (83.3%), followed by gastritis was diagnosed in 69.1% of patients. The pathologies found as predominant background is the consumption of alcohol (51.2%), followed by upper gastrointestinal bleeding previa (48.8%). The predominant clinical manifestations were: melena (94.4%), hematemesis (64.8%) and abdominal pain (51.2%). The hospital stay between 4-7 days (53.7%) was the most common, followed by 8 to 11days (35.8%). The topographic location of upper gastrointestinal bleeding was headed by stomach with 91.4%, endoscopic classification Forrest III (57.4%) was the most frequent in patients diagnosed with peptic ulcer. The evalue of the most frequent admission hemoglobin level is 5.8 - 7.8 g / dl (47.5%) of all patients with gastrointestinal bleeding Alta 75.3% required blood transfusion, of which 53.3% received transfusion 2 globular packages. The mortality occurred in 6.2% while 93.2% of patients were discharged signs of improvement CONCLUSIONS: Upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients treated at the hospital II-2 Sullana is demographically characterized by more frequent in males, in patients aged 60-69 years in the independent occupational group and be more abundant in educational attainment secondary. In the context of pathogenic history and comorbidities: alcoholism, upper gastrointestinal bleeding and liver cirrhosis after are the most common coexisting conditions with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, according to the most frequent topographic location is found in the stomach.
