Objective: To find the association between the pattern of alcohol consumption and the body mass index in health science students. Material and methods: An observational, analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 248 health sciences students in whom the pattern of alcohol consumption and nutritional status was determined according to body mass index (BMI), which were distributed in two groups, students with a normal BMI 209 and students with abnormal BMI 39. Results: The average age in the groups was 23,67 ± 2,70 for students with abnormal BMI and 22,63 ± 2,50 for students with normal BMI (p = 0,020); the proportion of men each group was 82,05% and 40,19% and of women were 17,95% and 59,81% (p = 0,001). There were significant differences in the group with abnormal BMI and normal BMI for the following variables: family consumption of alcoholic beverages (69,23% vs 83,73%; p = 0,032) and smoking habit (51,28% vs 29,66%; p = 0,008). The pattern of alcohol consumption in males in the groups with abnormal BMI was quintile 1, 2 and 3 (28,20%; 23,07%; 23,07%) and with normal BMI was 1, 2 y 3 (7,17%; 4,30%; 25,83%) (p = 0,006). No significant differences were found in the pattern of women's consumption. Conclusions: There is an association between the pattern of alcohol consumption and the body mass index in health sciences students.
