OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine what are the predictors of good hand hygiene practice in internal and residents of medicine. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Were studied 254 internal and residents of medicine between December 2017 and February 2018. The hand hygiene questionnaire of the World Health Organization was used. RESULTS: The prevalence of good hand hygiene practice was 25.59%. Age in the groups with and without good hand hygiene practice were 28.27 ± 4.54 and 27.69 ± 4.48 years respectively (p > 0.05); the proportion of women in each group was 56.92% and 38.10% respectively; (OR = 2.15 [1.21-3.80]) (p < 0.01). In relation to knowledge, the good category was 10.77% and 1.06% in the groups with and without good hand hygiene practice (OR = 11.28 [2.28-55.83]) and in attitude, the good category was 78.46% and 62.96% respectively (OR = 2.14 [1.11-4.15]); both categories were significant (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05 respectively). Female sex (ORa: 2.23, 95% CI [1.23-4.02], p <0.001) and the presence of knowledge in its good category (ORa: 9.04, 95% CI [1.55] -52.70], p <0.05) were significantly associated with good hand hygiene practice and were part of the prediction model. CONCLUSIONS: The female sex and good knowledge were predictors of good hand hygiene practice. Educational interventions should be implemented to reinforce knowledge and motivate a positive attitude towards hand hygiene.
