Objective: To determine if the quality of sleep is a factor associated with depression in resident physicians and assistants of the Belén Trujillo Hospital. Material and Methods: An analytical, observational, cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out. The study population consisted of 192 physicians according to established inclusion and exclusion criteria divided into two groups: with or without depression, the odds ratio and chi square test were calculated. Results: The practice of nocturnal guards and the medical condition of the resident physician are observed with a significantly higher frequency in the group with depression than in the group without depression (p <0.05). The proportion of alteration in sleep quality in physicians with depression was 32%. The proportion of alteration in sleep quality in physicians without depression was 8%. Poor sleep quality is a factor associated with depression in physicians with an odds ratio of 5.3 which was significant (p <0.05). In the multivariate analysis, the factors associated with depression were the poor quality of sleep variables, nocturnal guards, and being a resident doctor (p <0.05). Conclusions: The quality of sleep is a factor associated with depression in resident physicians and assistants of the Belén Trujillo Hospital.
