THE AIM: Determine if there is Association of family dysfunction and depression in the elderly. El Porvenir Hospital Basic Specialties. Trujillo district, in 2016. MATERIAL AND METHOD: was a study observational analytical, of cases and controls, it shows was integrated by 158 adults of 60 to 89 years divided in 58 adults with depression and 58 adults older without depression. It applied the test Apgar family for the dysfunction family and the scale geriatric of depression of Yesavage. RESULTS: The frequency of dysfunction family in patients adults older with depression was 46.6% and in 24.1% in those patients not depressive with difference statistics (p = 0.010). We found an odss ratio of 2.74 with a 95 CI 1.24 to 6.05%. indicating that the adults older that belong families dysfunctional increases almost two times more the risk of suffering depression, compared with which belong to families functional. CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of family dysfunction was higher in older adults with depression, where family dysfunction was associated as a risk factor for depression.
