OBJECTIVE: To determine if Physiological Neonatal Jaundice is a risk factor for Allergic Rhinitis in patients under 14 years of age at the Belén Hospital of Trujillo during the period between January 2010 and December 2015. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A type, analytical, observational, retrospective, case and control study was carried out, the selection process was carried out under the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a total of 250 patients registered, but due to purification reasons, missing and repeated only 80 cases and 80 controls were considered. RESULTS: The frequency of physiological neonatal jaundice in patients younger than 14 years with allergic rhinitis and without allergic rhinitis was 67.5% and 51.25% respectively (OR: 1.98, 95% CI [1.043.75] ; p <0.05). The most affected age group was the patients who presented the range of 6 ± 2 years; the average of indirect bilirubin levels at the time of diagnosis of physiological neonatal jaundice was 12.29 ± 1.96 and 9.80 ± 1.45 mg / dl, in the case and control groups respectively (p <0, 05); Likewise, it was found that bronchial asthma was associated with the presence of allergic rhinitis (OR: 2.78, 95% CI [1.31-5.88]). CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal physiological jaundice is a risk factor for Allergic Rhinitis in patients younger than 14 years of Bethlehem Hospital in Trujillo, being twice as likely to have allergic rhinitis as those who did not have physiological neonatal jaundice. The age group most affected by allergic rhinitis was the range of 6 ± 2 years.
