Objective: To determine the associated factors that increase the probability of the appearance of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients with ascities. Material and methods: We studied 113 clinical histories of cirrhotic patients of alcoholic origin with ascites between January 2013 and December 2017. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis was determined by the presence of more than 500 leukocytes / ml with more than 250 polymorphonuclear (PMN) / ml in the ascitic fluid, and / or obvious clinical signs, with or without positive result of the culture registered in the clinical history. Results: the bivariate analysis identified as variables associated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis at the child-pugh scale (p 0.001), the previous episode of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (p 0.000), and serum albumin (p 0. 000). In the multivariate analysis were identified the previous episode of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis ORa: 6,875, IC 95% [1,517-31,148] p 0,012 and serum albumin sérica ORa: 0,128; IC 95% [0,050-0,328]; p 0,000) as factors associated with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and were part of the prediction model. The ROC curve was graphed to evaluate the power to predict the disease obtaining a value of 86% being significant. Conclusion: A patient with a previous episode of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is 6 times more likely to have the disease compared to one who does not have this history. In addition, at higher levels of serum albumin 87.2% lower probability of presenting spontaneous bacterial peritonitis compared to one that has hypoalbuminemia.
