Objective: To determine if c-reactive protein has value as a predictor of sepsis in patients with severe burns at Hospital Belén de Trujillo. Material and methods: Retrospective, observational, diagnostic study of 98 burned patients. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative. The chi square test was applied and the area under the curve for PCR was determined. Results: The group of large burns with sepsis had an average body surface area and a significantly higher frequency of diabetes mellitus than the group without sepsis (p <0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of c-reactive protein as a predictor of sepsis in large-burn patients was 85% and 88%, respectively. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value of c-reactive protein as a predictor of sepsis in large-burn patients was 73% and 94%, respectively. The area under the c-reactive protein curve as a predictor of sepsis in heavily burned patients was 84%. Conclusions: C-reactive protein has value as a predictor of sepsis in patients with severe burns at Hospital Belén de Trujillo.
