To determine the epidemiology clinical characteristics of pediatric patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) of Hospital José Cayetano Heredia III (HJCH), Piura 2013- 2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study. All patients older than 1 month and under 14 admitted to the ICU of HJCH during 2013-2014 were included. Patients who were referred to other hospitals, who died within the first 24 hours of admission to ICU or having readmissions to ICU were excluded. Data from clinical records were collected in a data collection sheet developed for this study where variables included clinical, epidemiological and pediatric mortality rate (PIM2) and the risk of pediatric mortality was calculated. (PRISM III). A database in Microsoft Excel and SPSS 19.0 statistical package was performed. Worked quantitative variables based on measures of central tendency and frequencies and percentages for qualitative variables. RESULTS: A total of 59 patients were found, with an average age of 48.85 months and xxx% male. The average length of stay in ICU was 49.2%. 88.1% had a eutrophic nutritional status. A mortality rate of 15.3% was obtained. The most common reasons for admission were: diseases of the CNS (22%), respiratory diseases (23.7%) and sepsis (15.3%). The comorbidity was more frequently observed in ICU was metabolic and electrolyte (27.1%) disorders. 28.8 %% inotropic used. The use of mechanical ventilation (17%) and delay admission to ICU range of <12-24HRS (13.6%) of the mortality rate. PIM2 score range <15% (15.3%) and PRISM III (8.5%) CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients admitted to the ICU of HJCH are on average younger than 5 years, predominantly male, during main income respiratory diseases and a mortality rate of 23.7%
