Objective: To evaluate if hyponatremia is a factor associated with mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke at Hospital Victor Lazarte Echegaray during the period between January 2010 and July 2016. Material And Methods: We performed an observational, analytical, crosssectional study that evaluated 148 patients with acute ischemic stroke, who were divided into two groups, the deceased 14 patients and the survivors 134 patients. Results: The mean age in the dead and survivor patients was 86.07 ± 7.57 vs 81.37 ± 5.73; p < 0.01; the male sex was 92.86% vs 61.19%; p < 0.05. The hypertension was the most common comorbidity in the dead and in the survivors (100% vs 64.18%, p <0.01). The mean SBP at admission was 164.29 ± 18.69 vs 141.90 ± 11.71 mmHg; p < 0.001. Serum sodium levels at admission were 132.24 ± 8.50 vs 138.27 ± 6.82; p < 0.01; When categorizing sodium in hyponatremia was found that in the dead 64.29% vs 34.33%; p < 0.05. Multivariate analysis identified age (ORa = 1.21), systolic blood pressure at admission (ORa = 1.28) and hyponatremia (ORa = 5.75) as independent factors associated with mortality in patients with stroke. Conclusions: Hyponatremia was the main independent factor associated with mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
