Objective: The aim of this study was identify the relationship between periodontal disease and preterm birth. Patients and methods : This case-control study included postpartum women 18-36 years of age ; 25 woman who gaven birth before 37 ª week (cases)were compared to 50 woman with term deliveries(controls), who were receiving prenatal care at Regional Hospital of Trujillo while March- April 2016.Periodontal disease was assessed according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention / American Academy of periodontology (CDC/APP) using a periodontal Probe Hu friedy PCP 11.5 by WHO. The results of our study were registered in a clinical record. The chi –square test was used to examine differences in the proportion of categorical variables Results: An observable relationship was noticed between periodontal disease and preterm birth. With regard to the prevalence of periodontal disease in postpartum women with preterm labor, 76% with moderate periodontal disease and in the case of postpartum women with term delivery 62% with incipient periodontal disease. Conclusions: There is relationship between periodontal disease and preterm birth.
